Terms of service
What we promise, and what we deliberately do not.
Written in the same plain language as the rest of the site. The important clause is the one about what happens if we miss something, and it is not buried.
Not ready to publish. The contracting entity,
registered address and governing law are not filled in. Set them in
tools/build_site.py and rebuild. Terms that do not name
who you are contracting with are not terms.

1. Who this agreement is with
These terms are between you — the agency or person using Plumbline — and [LEGAL ENTITY NAME], of [REGISTERED ADDRESS], [JURISDICTION] (“we”, “us”). Using the service means accepting them.
2. What the service does
Plumbline visits websites you have nominated, on a schedule, from the outside. It records what it observed, opens an incident when a failure is confirmed on more than one attempt, notifies the destinations you configure, and produces monthly reports.
3. What we promise
- What we report is true. Every result reflects a check we actually performed, with the evidence stored and available to you.
- We will not report our own failures as yours. A check we could not carry out is recorded as ours, shown as ours, and excluded from the figures given to your client.
- We will not alert you on a single failed check. A failure must be observed on separate attempts before it becomes an incident.
- We will not stop watching without telling you. If your account lapses, checks continue through a stated grace period and any suspension is announced, never silent.
4. What we do not promise
This section is the honest one, and we would rather you read it now than discover it during a bad week.
We do not guarantee that your sites stay up. We are not hosting them and we cannot influence them. We observe and report.
We do not guarantee that we will detect every problem. Checks are periodic. A failure that begins and ends between two checks may never be seen by us. A failure only visible to a logged-in user, or only in a region we do not check from, may not be seen either. We claim that what we report is true — not that we catch everything. The first is a promise we can keep and it is the more valuable one.
We do not offer an availability commitment for Plumbline itself. No SLA, no uptime target, no service credits. We have no operating history to support such a number, and publishing one we could not stand behind would contradict everything else on this site. What we do instead is publish a heartbeat you can check yourself — see the status page.
We never quote uptime percentages, for your sites or for ours. Why not.
5. Your obligations
- Only monitor sites you are authorised to monitor. You must verify control of each site before it is checked. Attempting to defeat that verification, or monitoring a site you have no relationship with, ends the account.
- Keep your credentials safe, and tell us promptly if you think they have been compromised.
- Do not use Plumbline to load-test, stress, or attack anything, including your own sites. It is a monitoring service, and at volume the two are indistinguishable from the far end.
- Alerts are not a safety system. Do not rely on Plumbline as the only control where a missed detection would cause harm to health, safety, or anything irreversible.
6. Accounts and invitations
Sign-up is currently by invitation. An invitation code is single-use, expires after thirty days, and may be bound to one email address. You are responsible for anyone you invite into your agency’s account.
7. Fees
The price list is published at /pricing and forms part of these terms. Charging is a flat monthly fee for the plan that covers the number of sites you watch. Passing an allowance moves the whole account to the next plan; there is no per-site surcharge on top of it.
At present there is no charge: no payment method is in use and nothing can be billed. We will give at least thirty days’ notice by email before that changes, and you may close the account rather than accept it.
A new account is watched for thirty days before anything is owed. If a payment later fails, checks continue for fourteen days while we tell you, and only then may the account be suspended.
8. Your data
What we hold and for how long is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: you own it, you can export it, you can have it deleted, and a deleted client is purged within thirty days.
For the sites you monitor, you are the data controller and we are your processor. A Data Processing Agreement is available on request.
9. Liability
We are not liable for losses arising from a problem we did not detect, or detected later than you would have liked. That includes lost sales, lost clients, reputational harm, and the cost of putting the problem right. Monitoring reduces how long a failure goes unnoticed; it does not transfer the consequences of that failure to us.
Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the fees you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. While the service is free, that figure is zero, and we would rather say so plainly than let you discover it in a clause.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
10. Suspension and ending it
You can stop at any time, from the application or by writing to us. There is no notice period and no termination fee.
We may suspend an account that is being used to monitor sites it has no right to monitor, to attack a third party, or in a way that threatens the service for others. Where it is safe to do so we will tell you first; where it is not, we will tell you immediately afterwards and explain why.
11. Changes to these terms
We will email account owners at least thirty days before any change that materially affects you, and the date at the top of this page will change. Continuing to use the service after that means accepting the new version; closing the account is always the alternative.
12. Law
These terms are governed by the law of [JURISDICTION], and its courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not take away rights you have under the law of the country you live in.
